Race Against Time: Day 5 of Uttarakhand Tunnel Rescue Operation

Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand: In a harrowing incident that unfolded on Sunday morning around 5 am, a tunnel on the Brhmakhal-Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, partially collapsed, trapping 40 workers inside. The ensuing days have seen a relentless rescue operation, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and the Uttarakhand administration working tirelessly to ensure the safety of those trapped.

Former Army Chief and Union Minister VK Singh visited the site on Thursday to take stock of the ongoing rescue operation, now entering its fifth day. Expressing optimism, Singh stated, “We have full hope, and we are trying our best to bring everyone to safety.” However, challenges persist as reports indicate that some trapped individuals are suffering from health issues such as headaches and nausea.

In an effort to enhance the expertise involved in the operation, authorities are seeking guidance from international sources, specifically engaging experts from Norway and Thailand. The collaboration aims to leverage the experience and insights of these professionals to ensure a swift and safe rescue.

The collapse of the tunnel on Sunday prompted the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) to take responsibility for drilling operations. High-end machines have been transported from Delhi to aid in the rescue efforts. Sources close to the operation estimate that it may take a further 20 hours to conclude the rescue mission successfully.
